Education

What's happening in Education?

Educational agencies and institutions collect and maintain large amounts of data about students in order to provide educational services. Some student information may need to be preserved indefinitely, or destroyed when it is no longer relevant. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the confidentiality of student information. A detailed explanation of FERPA and the  requirements can be found on the PTAC website https://studentprivacy.ed.gov.

Operations risks

In most cases, deleting a digital record or file will be insufficient to destroy the data information contained. Digital data is typically preserved in the system, and can often be “undeleted.” Specific technical methods used to dispose of the data greatly impact the likelihood that any information might be recovered.

Modern electronic data storage devices are extremely resilient, and data recovery techniques are highly advanced. Therefore, it is important to follow the correct and best methods for data destruction in order to prevent the disclosure of sensitive student data such as Social Security Numbers, names, and dates of birth.
